American Curls are pretty healthy cats overall, but they do have a few things to watch out for. Their ears are the big one – those cute curled ears can get infections or mites more easily than normal cat ears. Gotta keep ’em clean!
Some Curls might have heart problems, like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It’s not super common, but worth knowing about. Regular vet checkups can catch it early if it happens.
Joint issues pop up sometimes too. Hip dysplasia or patellar luxation can affect their movement as they get older. Keeping them at a healthy weight helps a ton with that.
Oh, and their eyes can be sensitive. Some get conjunctivitis or other eye irritations. Using pet-safe cleaning wipes around their eyes can prevent a lot of that.
Dental problems are another thing to keep an eye on. Brushing their teeth (if they’ll let you!) or giving dental treats can make a big difference.
Most of these aren’t major health concerns, just stuff to be aware of. With good care, American Curls usually live long, happy lives. Regular vet visits, a good diet, and lots of love go a long way in keeping them healthy.
